MOVIE TALK: “Once Upon A Time” PT. 3 🎬

Welcome to Part 3!

I finally caught up with OUAT on Netflix. Now I am awaiting Season 7’s arrival. I am so excited to see what happens next in the series. It is such a good show.

In the last Movie Talk, we discussed the trials and magic aids that occurred throughout the series to help Emma Swan and the other characters. This does continue into Season 6.

• Meeting with the Goddess

The hero experiences a love that has the power and significance of the all-powerful, all-encompassing, unconditional love that a fortunate infant may experience with his or her mother.

True love is another theme that occurs often in the series. It is known to the characters of OUAT as the most powerful magic of all and that it has the ability to break even the darkest and strongest curse and its magic is tested each season and proved to be true.

Emma first experiences true love with Henry, her son, then with her parents when she accepts them into her life and they vow to always be there for her, and finally she finds her one true love in Killian Jones also known as Hook when she travels to the Underworld to bring him back.

I could also say this applies to the season finale when Emma sacrifices herself believing that light cannot destroy light and she saves everyone.

We were also introduced to the story of Aladdin and Jasmine in the 6th season and we learned that Aladdin gave up his powers as a savior because it became too much for him and he even offered Emma a way out but she decides to not back down.

Rumpelstiltskin also had the opportunity to become a savior but in the end his mother, The Black Fairy, and he chose darkness. Either way, I can’t imagine anyone else being the savior but Emma.

 

Emma was having a war within herself throughout the season believing that she would die after seeing a vision of her fighting an unknown evil and losing, but in the end, she has to choose her own destiny and she won.

• Temptation

This involves anything that could steer the hero away from completing the journey. There are usually in the form of material possessions.

There have been many moments where Emma has had to make the decision for a fight or flight.

Season 6 is no different from the past obstacles and temptations. Emma is in a new world and doesn’t remember that she is the savior and doesn’t believe and Henry tries to convince her but it doesn’t work and all hope seems to be lost. Eventually, Emma does begin to believe again.

The Storybook which has been used during previous seasons as a sort of talisman was used in Season 7 as the material temptation. The Black Fairy urges Emma to burn the book because she doesn’t want Emma to remember or believe. The Black Fairy tells Emma that Henry is ill and that the book is doing more harm than good. All hope seems lost when Emma burns the book but in the end, she comes back stronger and the Black Fairy is destroyed.

• Atonement with the Father

This is the center point of the journey. The hero must face and be initiated by whatever holds the greatest power in their life. This sometimes appears as a father figure for the hero. This figure will have the power of life and death.

In this series, there may be multiple atonements because hope and love saved everyone in the series finale. It was hope that gave her the courage that she could live or die but she wasn’t going to be fearful of doing the right thing. It was also love involved because Henry gave true love’s kiss to his mother when he thought she died and she was okay.

•  Apostasis

The hero dies a physical death or dies to their self in order to live in spirit. They are able to move beyond to a state of divine knowledge, love, compassion, and bliss.

Robin Hood’s death could be seen as an apostasis. As he died, you could see his spirit float away and I remember thinking to myself that what if he existed in a different dimension.

This could be something new to explore in upcoming seasons where these characters exist as different people in different dimensions. The show even hints at the idea when Regina travels to a different dimension and meets a new Robin Hood that is completely different from the man she fell in love with. She began to believe that a piece of Robin Hood remained even though he passed away because she also found a keepsake (feather) from his bow when she met this Robin Hood.

•  The Ultimate Boon

The achievement of the goal of the quest. The is what the hero has worked so hard to obtain during the journey. The previous steps prepared them for this step.

I believe that we will find this out for the upcoming season. Emma is now free, to love and to live her life with Hook. They are married and will probably start a family.

She has overcome a lot in the past 6 years. She went from being a foster kid, a runaway, fugitive, and alone to having a family full of heroes and it may be time for her to move on. She has faced all of her demons and won the final battle.

• Rescue from Without

The hero needs a powerful guide to help them get back to their life. This is most essential is the hero has become wounded or weakened by the experience.

For Emma, this could be her family and friends who will be there for her. A tough battle was fought and they won.

Maybe a new StoryBook will be revealed. The show has hinted that there is more than one book that contains stories.

•  Crossing the Return Threshold 

The hero retains the wisdom that is gained from the quest and uses it to continue in their life and shares this wisdom with the rest of the world.

This is still to be seen and I am excited about OUAT and to see what is to come.

Will there be new characters introduced with powers? Will there be a new savior? Will Emma or Regina teach them how to control their magic?

What will happen with Rumpel and Belle’s son?

• Master of Two Worlds

Achieving a balance between the material and spiritual world; the inner and outer world.

This is still to be seen as well. I imagine that Henry would somehow bring this mastery forward. He is the truest believer and he was able to make everyone believe before when they needed it most. He also became the author of the storybook.

• Freedom to Live 

The hero has mastered the skills and pathway throughout the journey. They are now free to live from the fear of death which in turn is the freedom to live. This can also be known as living in the moment, not anticipating the future, nor regretting the past.

This can be seen as Emma’s sacrifice and choosing to love and have hope instead of fear and she was set free.

This also can and most likely will come into play again at the end of the series not just for Emma but for all the characters.
