MOVIE TALK: “Once Upon A Time” PT. 2 🎬

Welcome to Part 2 of the Once Upon A Time Movie Talk. I decided to break the discussion into multiple parts because it is an ongoing series that has so many good plot points that make it impossible to squeeze into one blog post.

Picking up where we left off…

We had just covered “Refusal to Return”. This is a reoccurring topic during the series. When you watch the show you can’t help but notice that it is as if the characters are constantly tested to see what they will choose. Their belief seems to always be in question whether it is in each other or the world around them. We, the audience, found out early on in the show that without belief, magic cannot exist and at the end of the season, none of the characters or the stories could continue to exist if Emma, the savior, no longer believed.

✍️ Crossing First Threshold

The first travel into the unknown. It is often a dangerous realm where the rules and limits are not known.

The first big adventure or crossing for Emma was coming to Story Brooke, however, through seasons 1-5 the main characters have gone in and out of the Enchanted Forest, Time Traveled, and the Underworld.

Entering into Season 6, the characters were once again affected by a new curse that separated everyone and brought forth the final battle.

One thing that I have noticed is that the series circles back around through this cycle for certain plot points.

✍️ Belly of the Whale

Final separation from the hero’s known world and self. This stage represents the hero’s willingness to go through a metamorphosis.

I would say this happened when Emma accepted her powers. She didn’t know that she had any and when she couldn’t control them she pushed everyone away and it only made things worse.

She first learned she had powers when Cora tried to take her heart but she couldn’t because Emma protected herself.

✍️ Road of Trials

Tests the hero must undergo to begin the transformation. They often fail one of the tests.

There are many different tests that Emma will continue to go through but the one set of tests that stuck out to me was when she became the Dark One in order to save Regina and everyone from the darkness.

 

#1 Before it happened she was tempted three times to use dark magic and the first time she failed. Eventually, she had to use it to save everyone and she became the Dark One.

#2 Emma kills Cruella to save Henry.

#3 We later find out that Killian has also become the Dark One and that Emma made him the Dark One to save his life.

✍️ Magic Flight

Magic Flight always appears in the form of portals/doors or curses.

📌1st curse brought them to Story Brooke.

Regina wants revenge on Snow White.

📌2nd curse brought them to the Enchanted Forest.

Regina casts it to save everyone.

📌3rd curse brought them back to Story Brooke.

Snow casts it to bring everyone home.

📌There was the portal that separated Baelfire and Rumpel.

📌The underworld clock that Hade’s used to open a portal back to Story Brooke.

*David & Snow see Emma as a child and decide to not interrupt her life so that she can become the savior and help everyone in the future (Season 6).
